Overview for EZIE-Mag Installation sites

In response to your request for additional information, I am attaching several resources that I hope will be useful to you and the broader UNT team(and others):

  • EZIE-Mag How-To Guide — 2026 Update — the JHU/APL technical guide for assembling, configuring, operating, troubleshooting, and uploading data from the EZIE-Mag.
  • EZIE-Mag Explanation Guide — a very useful companion guide for understanding the EZIE-Mag interface, real-time measurements, data displays, sensor status, archived data, and the scientific context of the measurements.
  • EZIE MakerPlace Field Guide — Revised August 19 — our developing instructional guide for helping educators and students move from simply collecting magnetometer data toward observing patterns, comparing evidence across time and place, asking questions, testing whether observations repeat, and developing explanations grounded in what the evidence actually supports.
  • What Happens When Solar Weather Reaches Earth? Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis — a NASA HEAT teacher-created lesson I developed that connects Sun-Earth relationships, space weather, auroras, magnetic fields, and the EZIE mission.

One idea that has become increasingly important through our recent conversations with Dr. Rafael Mesquita is the scientific value of the network. A magnetometer at one location can tell us what is happening here. Continuous measurements help us understand what changes through time. When multiple communities contribute measurements from different locations, however, we can begin asking whether a change was local or part of something occurring across a larger region.

We have been describing each participating station as contributing a “pixel” of data. No single pixel provides the entire picture, but together our MakerPlace communities may begin assembling a much larger picture of Earth's changing magnetic environment.

Action Items for EZIE-Mag Project

First Work Session

Tuesday, August 18
2:30 p.m. MST (Arizona time)
Zoom – invitation/link attached

Please bring your EZIE magnetometer with you to the Zoom meeting. (Zoom invitation attached at the bottom of this email.) If possible, have the magnetometer, power supply, cables, and the device you will use to connect to it available and ready to work with during the session.

Our goal is to make this a hands-on working session. We will focus on areas that Maverick Educators have specifically asked for help with, including:

  • Setting up and connecting the EZIE magnetometer
  • Working through installation and connectivity questions
  • Understanding how the magnetometer gathers magnetic-field data
  • Accessing and reviewing the data being collected
  • Uploading and sharing data
  • Troubleshooting questions that have emerged as you have worked with your magnetometer
  • Preparing to begin using EZIE observations and data with students
Second Work Session

Thursday, August 27
2:30 p.m. MST (Arizona time)

The August 27 session will provide a second opportunity for educators who are unable to participate tomorrow, as well as additional time for anyone who attends the first session but still has questions or would benefit from further troubleshooting and support. If we are able to address everyone's needs tomorrow, some of you may find that the second session is not necessary.

Ultimately, our goal is not simply to get the magnetometers operating, but to help each of you become comfortable enough with the equipment and data to begin engaging your students in EZIE mission science, magnetic-field observations, space-weather investigations, and locally meaningful STEM inquiry.

As we move toward our September MakerPlace Meetup, I would also like us to begin thinking about what you and your students are observing and learning from your EZIE magnetometer data. We hope to begin sharing those experiences across our Maverick Educator network.

Please come tomorrow ready to work with your magnetometer and bring your questions, challenges, and discoveries. This is exactly what these work sessions are intended to support.

Installation Success at UNT

Any additional information would be great. I was able to get the EZIE Mag unit all setup and running. I had to get a replacement clock battery but after doing that everything is working well. It has been collecting data for about the past hour now.
